The Health and Safety Executive has released its 2024/25 statistics for work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders, revealing a mixed picture that demands attention from businesses across Northern Ireland, the UK and Ireland. Whilst total MSD cases decreased to 511,000 workers, new cases actually increased from 168,000 to 173,000. Perhaps most concerning is the rise in upper limb and neck injuries, now accounting for 41% of all work-related MSDs—up from 37% the previous year. With 7.1 million working days lost and approximately 14 days absence per MSD case, the financial and operational impact remains substantial. This analysis examines what these trends mean for businesses in high-risk sectors including construction, transportation, logistics and manufacturing, and why proactive Ergonomic intervention is more critical than ever for preventing workplace MSDs.
